How we improved our client’s Reach by only using trending audio for 30 days

At AHA Insights, we live for digital strategy. As a digital marketing agency, we spend our days analysing online trends, optimising content performance, and identifying the “why” behind the engagement numbers. However, when it came to some of our clients’ Instagram presence, the data was telling a frustrating story: plateau.

Even though we’re cranking out top-notch graphics and slick videos for the brands we’re working with, it seems our content is mostly playing to the home crowd, our existing followers. To escape the grind, we realised it was time to stop wrestling with the algorithm and start dancing to the music instead.

We decided to launch a 30-day experiment with one strict variable: Every single post would utilise instagram trending audio. No exceptions.

The Hypothesis: The “Audio-First” Discovery Engine

We suspected that Instagram’s algorithm treats trending audio as a “discovery tag.” By attaching our digital marketing insights to sounds that were already gaining momentum, we hypothesised that the platform would categorise our content as “high-interest” and push it to the Explore Page and the Reels Tab—the two primary engines for non-follower reach.

The Goal: Increase total monthly Reach by 20% and grow our non-follower engagement.

The 30-Day Protocol

To keep the experiment controlled, our team followed three strict rules:

  1. The “Rising Star” Rule: We avoided over-saturated tracks with millions of uses. Instead, we hunted for “Rising Stars”—audios with between 5,000 and 30,000 uses that featured the small “rising arrow” icon.
  2. The 70/30 Content Split: 70% of our posts were Reels, and 30% were silent single-images and carousel images.
  3. Contextual Integration: Our challenge was to take a trending sound like a rhythmic beat and find a way to make it relevant to digital marketing strategy and SEO.

The Results: Breaking the Algorithm

After 30 days of consistent posting, the results didn’t just meet our 20% goal—they shattered it.

1. Reach & Discovery

Our total Reach jumped by almost 50% compared to the previous month. The most telling metric was where that reach came from. Previously, only a small percentage of our reach came from “Non-Followers.” During the experiment, most of our views came from people who didn’t follow us.

2. The Explore Page Breakthrough

The “trending audio” strategy acted as a VIP pass to the Explore Page. Half of our Reels originated from the Explore Page. Follower Conversion By reaching a wider net of the right people, our follower growth rate increased by drastically in a single month. Because the trending audio got us into the room, our digital marketing expertise convinced people to stay.

Phase-by-Phase Breakdown

  • Week 1: The Learning Curve. We initially struggled to match our professional tone with trending sounds. We realised that audio is a tone-setter; you have to match the “vibe” to the value.
  • Week 2: Finding the “Vibe Match”. We shifted strategies. If the audio was high-energy, we shared fast-paced industry news. If the audio was lo-fi, we shared “Behind the Scenes” looks at our agency’s creative process.
  • Week 3: The “Early Adopter” Win. We caught a trending audio within the first 48 hours of it going viral.
  • Week 4: Consistency Pays Off. By the final week, the algorithm seemed to “know” our audience. Every post was being served to people interested in ergonomic chairs and office chairs (categories for our client, Sihoo)

3 Lessons for Your Brand

  1. Don’t Wait for the Peak: If a song is already on the radio, it’s likely too late for the algorithm. Find sounds that are starting to trend.
  2. Audio is the Hook, Content is the Value: Trending audio gets the user to stop scrolling, but your marketing expertise determines if they like or follow.
  3. The “Volume” Secret: The spike in profile visits from one viral Reel created a “halo effect”, increasing engagement across our entire feed, including older posts.

Our 30-day experiment showed that Instagram has levelled up from just eye candy to a full-on auditory feast! By flipping the script to an audio-first approach, we ditched the echo chamber and began popping up right where our future clients were searching.

For agencies and brands hitting a growth wall, the fix might not be a fancy new camera. It could just be the perfect 15-second zinger!
